Got a question on FrontPage email me!

Is it possible to FTP to your hosting service inside of FrontPage?  Absolutely yes!  While FrontPage works great with servers that have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, FrontPage will also upload to straight FTP servers as well.

How do I do that? First you need to know the FTP server name like ftp://ftp.mywebsite.com .  This is provided by your hosting service.  You should get that information when you sign up for webspace.  If you don't just contact the hosting service tech support and ask.

Then you need your username and password.  Without this you will never get your site uploaded!

Like this:

Server or Host Name: freeftp.bravehost.com
User Name: 3xxxxxxxxx
Password: Your Bravenet Password
Remote Directory: /

Now to plug this info into FrontPage:

  1. Go to File then Publish Web

  2. Insert the ftp server name.

  3. After pressing OK, you should get a password prompt

  4. Enter your username and password as given by your hosting service

  5. After pressing OK, you may get the following in any order.

  6. Then after all of the files have uploaded, just click Done.

Now the example uses Bravenet as a hosting service.  Bravenet does have FrontPage server extensions on the pay side of their hosting.  They offer FTP access on free hosting but FrontPage cannot do PASV mode FTP so you would actually have to use something like CuteFTP or WSFTP to upload to Bravenet.

Is it a good idea to have an FTP program in addition to using FrontPage.  YES!  There are times, when I have to use an FTP program to upload or to check an error that I get inside of FrontPage.

Happy web building!
