How to Fix Microsoft Word

When word opens like this, it is not using the normal.dot file or the data and options keys in the registry. If word works fine like this, then that tells you that deleting the normal.dot, and the data and options keys will fix the problem.

To find the normal.dot-

Then simply click on it and hit the delete key on the keyboard.

The next step is to remove the data and options keys from the registry.

This opens the registry editor. Do not remove anything in the registry that you are not 100% sure about!!

Once in the registry….

Click on the plus next to hkey_current_user. Then

Click the plus next to software….Then

Click the plus next to Microsoft….Then

Under the office folder, you will have two options depending on the version of word, an 8.0 folder for word 97, and a 9.0 folder for word 2000. Make sure that you are in the correct folder here depending on the version of office!!!

Then you will find the word folder under the office version folder. This is where you will delete the data and options keys.

You simply have the customer highlight them one at a time and hit the delete key on the keyboard. Make sure and ask the customer if it is blue where it says data or options, this will let you know that they have not highlighted something else by mistake.

When this is done, tell them to click on the registry menu at the top in gray, and chose exit. Restart word normally and that’s it.
