First , you must have administrator access to the
site. So, if you are the webmaster and have to move your site,
here's is what you have to do.
Sign up for an account on the hosting service you
are moving your site TO.
Find out what the FTP or upload servers are.
You will also need to find out all of the login information to
upload you site to the new server. Most hosting services will
send you an email of what the server names and login information is.
If you do not have your site on your local system (which
is asking for trouble), Login to your old server using ftp.
Copy every single file and folder on the old server
to your local system. Place all of the files and folders in to
a folder called Websites, my webs, or what ever you want to name,
just use a name you can remember since you will need to files and
folders later.
After downloading your site to your local system,
login to your new hosting service via FTP by using cuteFTP, WSFTP,
leechFTP or and other ftp program (you can ftp in a dos window or
command prompt)
After logging in, open the directory or folder on
your local system that has your website.
Select every file and folder and select to upload
those files to the new server.
Once the upload is complete just open you web
browser and type in the URL of the new website to verify that all
files and folders are on your site.
There are many FTP programs out there. On own Productivity - FTP page you will find
many of these programs for download. Some are Freeware and
others are Shareware
Can you edit web pages directly on the host? Yes, you
can. Depending upon the host, you can build the page and save it
directly on the hosting site. You can also do it using
MS FrontPage.
Just be advised, editing a web site in this manner can
result in some major problems:
Changing web hosts will be difficult since all of
your site is located in just one place.
If you cannot get to the page that allows editing
because it is down, you will not be able to make changes
So how to avoid this? Simple, build your site on
your local system using MS FrontPage, an HTML Editor, Visual InterDev,
or notepad. Then use anFTP
program to upload it. This way you ALWAYS have options!
Also make backups of your site at least once a week or daily if you
make changes to your site daily.
