NEW Issue:

Opening OE gives the "browse for folder" window and hangs

Solution:

Manually add the Store Root directory into the registry.

Open Regedit, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

In the right hand pane look for the value "Store Root". If it's not there, right-click on a blank space in the right-hand pane, click New, String Value, and type "Store Root" without quotes. Right-click on Store Root and Modify, then enter the complete path to the folder you want OE to use.

The default path is: C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Close Regedit and try re-installing OE.

Issue:   Digital ID error message: "This message is not cached. Please connect to server to download the message"

Solution:   The sender is having a problem with their ID. Possibly an expired ID

Issue:   Dead HTML links in OE

Solution:   Go to file types and edit "URL: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol" , change the 8.3 syntax to LFN

Example: before - c:\progra~1\inter~1\ieplore.exe

               after - c:\program files\internet explorer\ieplore.exe

Issue:   How to get word-wrapping in OE?

Solution:   There is no "smartwraping" in OE, use MIME/Quoted Printable as a workaround

Issue:   "Unknown error 0x80004005" when receiving mail in OE

Solution:   Delete the "Pop3uidl.dat", this file contains info on what files on the server should be downloaded.

Issue:   "WnetGetUser error"

Solution:    Added the client for MS networks, add computername and workgroup (no spaces or invalid characters)

Issue:   "An Internal error with Windows Internet Extensions" or "Wininet.dll error"

Solution:    Make sure there's only one wsock32.dll in windows\system and one winsock.dll in windows folder. Also uninstall/reinstall of TCP/IP if there are no multiple wsock files.

Issue:   "You do not have a digital ID in the addess book"

Solution:   Clear out the "reply address" field under properties, general. Also uncheck, "Include myself when sending encrypted mail"

Issue:   URLs in OE stop at "&" or blank

Solution:   Known issue being addressed. Workaround: use HTML format. Simply highlight a group of words, then click the Insert URL button. Then the entire URL is contained in the hyperlink.

Issue:   Spell-checker is greyed out in OE

Solution:   Locate mssp2_en.lex, mssp232.dll and custom.dic on your hard drive (note that you may have two custom.dic files). Make sure all three are in the same folder, usually C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof folder. Also, if for some reason mssp232.dll or mssp2_en.lex are not in that folder, make sure that you copy them to that location or custom.dic can be copied to their location.
