ACCESSING YOUR COMPUTER FROM A REMOTE SITE If you're on the road with your trusty laptop, you might well wish that you had brought another file or two with you. If you can access your computer via the Internet, you can use RemoteHome2000 from JPSoft. With RemoteHome, you can then contact your home computer and use FTP to transfers files between the two locations. RemoteHome is freeware and you'll find it at http://www.jpsoft.dk/uk/freeware.html
AutoFTP Free
This FTP freeware puts Windows Explorer-like functionality in an FTP client. SmartFTP allows you to cache remote directories and resume broken file transfers. Features include a multi-window Explorer-like interface, server to server transfer, and an FTP search tool. SmartFTP supports drag-and-drop functionality, multiple connections, and proxy servers. http://www.pcworld.com/r/shw/1%2C2087%2C6307%2C00.html
This file transfer software offers all the standard features of an FTP client, plus it includes an HTML editor for easy text and HTML editing. DirectFTP's features include drag-and-drop functionality, Linking and Image Wizards, multiple file format support, and the ability to preview images on the server. Quick Zipping functionality lets you back up your Web site with one click. http://www.pcworld.com/r/shw/1%2C2087%2C6441%2C00.html
LeechFTP This multi-threaded FTP client lets you run multiple file transfers simultaneously. LeechFTP's Job Queue feature assigns tasks to separate threads, then processes tasks one after another according to the queue. This enables you to continue browsing directories or connect to another server while you are uploading or downloading. Our Download page
There are times when you need to know the name associated with an IP address. There are also times when you know the name and would like to determine the IP address. We ran across a new program IPResolve that does an excellent job of getting the information either way. IPResolve is freeware and you'll find it at http://www.zone17.com/~software/ipresolve.php#downloads
Want a good program that gets the time from the Internet and keeps your computer always set to the correct time? Well, there are plenty of freeware programs around that will do this for you. However, we happened across one named Automachron recently and decided to give it a try. Any program with such a cool name has to be good. And it was good, and we're now using it in place of our old time program. Check this one out at http://www.oneguycoding.com/automachron/
INEXPENSIVE PRESENTATION SOFTWARE "My company recently asked me to do a presentation. The problem is that I can't buy one of the expensive presentation programs. I was wondering if you might know of a shareware program I can use. I have looked around on the Web and haven't had much luck." Not a problem. You should take a look at PowerShow Pro, which creates multimedia slide shows that can handle a variety of image files. You can also use WAV and MIDI files and choose from over 50 transition effects. You'll find the program at http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2C2061%2Ctw-ie40629%2C00.html Registration is $32. Note: This program requires the Visual Basic runtime module, Vbrun300.dll. If you don't have it, go to http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2C2061%2Ctw-ie40629b%2C00.html to download it. This file goes into your \Windows\System folder.
"A few months ago, I saw someone using an FTP program that was supposedly free for education professionals. I am a middle-school teacher and need a good FTP program to use in class. Do you have any idea which program is free to teachers?" One that comes to mind is WS_FTP Limited Edition. This is a very good FTP program, and it is free for noncommercial users. You can download it at http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2C2061%2Ctw-msie40812%2C00.html Good luck!
If you have problems getting disconnected from your ISP just because you go for a cup of coffee, you need a program that will periodically tell the ISP that you're still using the connection. One such program we have tried is Tickle. Tickle lets you specify one or more IP addresses. You can then tell Tickle what time period to use, and the program will begin to 'tickle' the ISP at your specified time interval. Tickle is freeware, and you can get it at http://www.worldlynx.net/pgerhart/_tickle.html
Let's suppose you're on a LAN, and you really need to know which computers are connected before you select a remote drive. Multi Tray Ping at http://www.moxom-software.co.uk/ may be just the tool you need. Multi Tray Ping, as its name suggests, resides in the system tray. When a remote computer is running, the light is green. When a remote computer is off, the light turns yellow. Yellow indicates that a connection to a remote computer was previously made, but the computer is now not responding. Red only appears before a connection has been made.
Do you get tired of all those pop-up ads you face as you browse the Web? Some even have sound so they can assault your ears as well as your eyes. The way to get rid of them is to use a pop-up eliminator program. We suggest that you try Pow from AnalogX. This neat little program will let you decide which pop-ups you want to see and which you don't. When a pop-up appears, just click the Pow icon in the system tray, then tell the program you don't want to see this pop-up again. The next time that pop-up appears, Pow will quickly close it. Pow is freeware ,and you can find it at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm
"I have been looking for a freeware FTP program. The problem is that all the ones I have seen come equipped with advertising banners--which I hate. Do you know of any good freeware FTP programs?" There are a number of free FTP programs. One of the most popular is WS_FTP LE (for Light Edition). WS_FTP LE is free for noncommercial use and does not use advertising banners. Another freeware FTP server we like is xFTP. Although somewhat less powerful than WS_FTP LE, xFTP is all you need to maintain a Web page online, and xFTP uses no advertising banners. You'll find it at http://xsite.lad.co.za/finfo.html Good luck!
In our never-ending search for the perfect cookie-eating tool, we recently ran across a neat utility called AdSubtract. This little jewel will eliminate both cookies and ads. You'll find AdSubtract at The program comes in three forms--SE (free for personal use), CE (more features for $14.95), and Pro (lots of features for $29.95). Visit the Web site and read about the various features. This one does a great job.
We were discussing FTP and FTP clients in the last tip. This reminded us of a new client we happened across recently. BlueZone FTP is a product of Renex Corporation. This excellent product is small and efficient and apparently pretty bug-free (meaning we haven't come across any bugs). We have Run BlueZone in Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Professional. BlueZone features an Explorer-type user interface and is easy to set up and use. You'll have to register, but there's no charge. You can download BlueZone at http://www.renex.com/download/
"If you would like to send anonymous e-mail--maybe to one of those nosy Internet companies--you could use a copy of Black Box Mail 2.0 from BlackBox Software." This mail program will allow you to send e-mail without displaying your true e-mail address or name. You can get the program (freeware) at
Do you ever need to download a number of files from one site? You probably don't want to sit around and click each one. So, what's the solution? You could try a batch downloader such as Jon's Downloader. This freeware program will go through your file list and download them one at a time until it gets them all. To check this out, go to http://www.delphifreestuff.com/delphi/index_downloader.html and see what you think. C'mon, it's free!
CHECK YOUR SECURITY--AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT If you are using a cable modem, security is most likely one of your concerns (if not, it probably should be). To see how secure your system really is, you can try two Internet sites: and Both of these sites check your computer, looking for entry points. If you discover that your system is not very secure, go to http://www.zonelabs.com/download_ZAfree.htm and download the latest ZoneAlarm (currently 2.1). After you install ZoneAlarm, go back to the security sites listed above and check your system again. You may be surprised at what you find--or don't find.
If you would like to see what ports are open on a computer, including your own network, go to http://www.autonoc.com/downloads.htm and download AutoNOC Port Scan 1.0. This freeware program will check those ports for you. While you're visiting the AutoNOC Innovations site, you can also download Trace 3D. This utility will tell you what's going on at a link you'd like to use. This is one of the easiest-to-use tracing programs we've seen. By the way, both utilities are freeware.
If you spend a lot of time in front of your computer, and if you have Caller ID service, you might like to have a program that shows you who is calling. There are a number of these programs around, but one we like is CallerID from AnalogX. CallerID pops up to show who is calling when the phone rings. The program also keeps a log of your calls. CallerID is freeware, and you can download it at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system.htm
How would you like to speed up your Internet downloads? Go to http://www.downloadaccelerator.com/Default.asp and take a look at Download Accelerator Plus. This freeware utility speeds up your downloads by establishing multiple connections. Although we have only tested DAP with a cable modem (and experienced a significant download speed increase), we have been told that the speed increase is often even more striking with a phone modem. Note, though, that you can't exceed the modem's maximum of 56 kilobits per second (about 7 kilobytes per second). DAP runs in Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x, 5.x, and Netscape 4.x.
Since the recent turmoil over the I Love You worm and its descendents, several new programs and upgrades have appeared to help us battle these attacks. ZoneAlarm 2.1, probably the very best freeware or low-cost firewall programs around, has additional e-mail protection. You can download ZoneAlarm from ZoneAlarm is free for personal use and $19.95 for commercial use. Script Defender from AnalogX targets specific extensions, such as the VSS extension that housed the I Love You worm. Script is also freeware, and you can download it at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system.htm
"I have been working on a Web site I've put in my ISP's space. However, when I view my site, the ISP always places ads over my page. Are there any free or very inexpensive hosts that don't put ads on a Web page?" You may have trouble locating a free host that doesn't place ads on Web pages. However, if you go to http://www.comparewebhosts.com you'll find a complete list of hosts--some free, most not. There are some very inexpensive ones around. You can get a good site for $10 to $15 per month.
"A month or so ago, you suggested that Excite was offering free ISP service. You implied this was the only free service available. I have discovered since then that there are many from which to choose. My favorite is WorldSpy because it doesn't use as many pop-ups as the others. You can sign up at the following URL:" http://www.worldspy.com/freeisp/isp.asp We didn't intend to imply that Excite was the only free ISP available. We tried a few and liked Excite because of its fast connection speed at our location, and the fact that it has local numbers in many areas. We agree that WorldSpy is a good choice. For now at least, it doesn't add any banners at all, and hopefully it never will. As Todd says, there are many other free ISPs available. To locate some of them, click in your Address Bar, type ? free isp and press Enter. Good luck, and good will surfing.
If you're looking for a suitable domain name, you need to find out what's already taken. Or maybe you simply want to find out who owns a specific domain name. What you need is WhoIs Ultra from AnalogX. This program will check those domain names, furnish you with a detailed report if needed, and launch your Web browser, sending you to the page in which you're interested. WhoIs Ultra is freeware. You can download it (and read more about it) at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/whois.htm Happy domain hunting!
If you're concerned about the trail of cookies a long day on the Internet leaves on your hard disk, you need Cookie Muncher. Cookie Muncher takes a different approach from most cookie eliminators--it lets the Web site store its cookies on your hard disk, then it deletes them. Using this approach lets you avoid the nasty messages you get when you turn cookies off. Cookie Muncher is freeware, and you can download it at http://www.bigwig.net/softwaredesign
If you seem to forever be downloading masses of spam and you're sick of it, take a look at Spam Motel can help you determine where the spammers got your address and stop the spam--some of it, at least. Although you can download some interface software at the site, Spam Motel is not a stand-alone software solution, but a service you must join to use. As far as we can see, the service looks safe--but although we have no reason to think the site uses the member addresses itself, we can't make any guarantee. The service is worth checking out--we recommend that you read the material at the Web site thoroughly before you make a decision, though. And keep in mind that when you eliminate spam, you usually end up eliminating information you want along with it. This dilemma is very difficult, if not impossible, to avoid.
As you probably know, several bits of software get placed on your computer for the sole purpose of tracking your browsing habits. The owners of these programs then use that information to send you ads that fit your interests. Some people like this, some don't care, and some are offended. If you're among the offended, take a look at Ad-Aware Version 3.52 from Lavasoft. Ad-Aware will locate, and remove if you wish, Web3000, Gator, Cydoor, Radiate\Aureate, Conducent\TimeSink, and CometCursor. Note that some ad-supported software will not run if you delete the tracking programs. Ad-Aware is freeware. If you want to download it and give it a try, go to
If you really hate dealing with all those ads that appear on almost every Web page you visit, and if you really hate cookies, what you may need is a copy of AdSubtract. AdSubtract comes in three versions--SE (free), CE ($14.95), and Pro ($29.95). Go to http://www.adsubtract.com/products.html to read about the three versions and download one (at least the free one) for use.
Do you sometimes get tired of having to close multiple pop-up boxes after you leave Internet Explorer 4? If so, what you need is a good pop-up eliminator. We'd like to suggest Pow from AnalogX. Pow is an excellent tool that allows you to decide which pop-ups you want to see and which ones you don't. It's especially good for eliminating pop-ups you run into on the same sites every day. Pow is freeware, and you'll find it at http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm
When you're working at the computer and the phone rings, you can tell who is calling if you have Caller ID--but you probably have to lean over and check the ID display. Since the display is probably LCD, you may have to look at it from just the right angle to read it. Well, you can solve the display problem very easily with a Caller ID computer program. You can have the caller info pop up on your computer screen right before your eyes, where reading it is no problem. Or you can even have the computer tell you who's calling. Neat, huh? You can do all this and more with Impulse Technology's Identify. Just go to to download the program. Give it a test, then register for $17.95.
PROGRAM TO RESTORE WINDOWS 95/98 You know how easy it is to crash Windows 95/98. You install a program or you uninstall a program, and it all stops working. Those of us who spend some time on the Internet downloading and testing programs have more trouble than people who stick with word processing and e-mail. A number of programs will help you restore Windows without going through a complete reinstall. One such program is Program Which Restores Windows 95/98 Full Version V 1.5. Yes, that lengthy moniker is the program's name. It's a product of Vadim & K Program Group. You can try this program for 30 days, after which you'll have to register for $29. Download it at http://www.bestprograms.nm.ru/ If you have trouble downloading the file, click Download Mailserver to have the file e-mailed to you. Good luck!
"I was looking for an easy way to see what files a CAB file contained and extract any one of them. I discovered that WinZip 7.0 can do just that--no fuss, no muss. All you have to do is double-click a CAB file and it will open in WinZip." For those of you who may have never used WinZip, you'll find the latest version at You can download WinZip and try it. If you decide you want to keep it, the registration fee is $29. Upgrades are free.
"I am on the road quite a lot, and I needed some way to check my office computer while traveling. I checked dozens of remote computing programs, and the fastest I found was Remote Administrator from Famatech. This program lets you control essentially all the functions on your office computer back home. You can shut down the computer, restart it, install software--almost anything. "Remote Administrator is available at "The really great thing about Remote Administrator is that registration is only $25." We checked this one out, and Remote Administrator runs well in Windows 98 and Windows NT Workstation 4.0. However, it does have some problems with Windows 2000. It will run, but you must read up on how to install it in the FAQ at the Famtech Web page.
If you have several computers on a local area network (LAN), you may wish you had an easy way to control one of the computers. For example, if you use a single computer to handle your Internet connections and act as a print server, that computer doesn't need a monitor. Of course, with no monitor, you would have to attach one to install a program or just check the system out. One easy and free way to do this is to download and install VNC (Virtual Network Computing) from AT&T Laboratories Cambridge. This freeware program will display the remote computer's desktop on your screen. You can perform whatever functions you need to--load software, uninstall software, set up a printer, and so forth. You can do almost anything you would do if that computer had a monitor attached. You'll find VNC at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ http://realvnc.com You might want to give it a try. The chances are good that it can use a common folder in both operating systems. This way, you could still use MSIE 4 in Windows 98.
"I have two computers networked using the Netgear network kit. At this time, I've attached only one computer to the Internet. Is there any freeware program that makes it possible for my wife to run Internet Explorer 4 from her computer as well?" What you need is a proxy server and, there is one very good freeware version available. Go to and download Proxy. This free and easy-to-use program should take care of your needs. During your visit to AnalogX, take a look at some of the other programs. They're all compact and very well written. While you're at it, go to and download ZoneAlarm 2.1. This firewall, which is free for personal use, can protect your network from malicious intruders--and that's always a good thing.
"In one of your recent tips, you suggested using CallerID from AnalogX (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system.htm) to display Caller ID on your computer. I use a program that goes a step further than Caller ID -- it hangs up on unwanted calls. The program is called No Sales Calls. "You can configure No Sales Calls to hang up on out-of-area, private, and phone booth calls. You can also establish a list of phone numbers No Sales Calls will disconnect. "Whenever I start to feel bad about hanging up on these sales calls, I just think about the number of times I have had them hang up on me because their computer moved on to someone else. No Sales Calls is a very versatile program. You can try it free for 30 days. After the 30 days, you can register for $10." You can download No Sales Calls from the home site: To use this program, you must have a phone system and modem that support Caller ID (most new modems are compatible).
If you're looking for a good FTP client, you might want to examine
3D-FTP from SiteDesigner Technologies. This program is equipped with
all the usual FTP client features along with an excellent user
interface. You'll find 3D-FTP at
http://www.pcworld.com/fileworld/file_description/0,1458,6316,00.html.
3D-FTP is shareware. You can use the fully functional (except for upload and download resume) evaluation version to see how you like it. If you decide to purchase the program, you can register online via the 3D-FTP site for $29.90.
