Connecting a new Router

Now you have installed broadband internet service and you have 3 computers.  What do you do?  Well, you need a router.  Several router are out there.  Airlink, SMC, and many others.  You connect it up to your computers and DSL/Cable modem and NOTHING.  What do you do?

  1. Disconnect all but one of the computers from the router.
  2. Open your browser and type in 192.168.1.1 (on some routers the address is 192.168.0.1)
  3. Type in the Default password for that router (usually found in the manual that came with the router.
  4. Then go through the setup procedure for your DSL/Cable provider (I will not go into that part since there are 5 different setups out there, at least maybe more)
  5. Once you have completed the setup of the router, then open up another browser window and type in a URL like google.com or yahoo.com.  if you you get those sites you are in business and you can connect up your other computers.
  6. If you get nothing then you need to verify that all information provided by you broadband provider has been entered correctly.
  7. So you have entered everything right but still nothing.  Open start then run and type cmd.exe (on winnt, win2k, winxp) or winipcfg (on win95, win98 or winme)
  8. On winnt, win2k, winxp. type  ipconfig /renew  then open up a new browser window and type in any URL.
  9. On win95, win98 or winme; select the drop down for your network adapter and press Renew, then open up a new browser window and type in any URL.
  10. You should get the web site at this point.
  11. If you still do not get anything, then check to see in the admin page of the router to see if you are getting an internet IP address other than 192.168.x.x. also verify that the Gateway is set right on the router for your provider.
