Got a question on SPARC? email me!

When you ls in the /var/sadm/spool directory you have 118833-36.jar along with some others.  You try to install patch 118833-36 or any other patch for that matter and also this occurs on the x86 version too.)  in Single user mode and you receive the following error:

Verifying signed patch <118833-36>...
Verifying digital signature for signer <es-signature>
ERROR: Signature verification failed while verifying certificate
<subject=Sun Microsystems Inc Root CA, issuer=/C=US/O=VeriSign,
Inc./OU=Class 2 Public Primary Certification Authority - G2/O>:<unable
to get local issuer certificate>.
ERROR: Unable to verify signature for signer <es-signature>
Signature invalid on signed patch <118833-36>.

Patchadd is terminating.

So how do you fix it?

Well after spending 5 hours crawling around the Sun site and Google, here's what I figured out:

Make sure you restart using init S to be in single user mode

Then type this at the prompt

# smpatch add -i 118833-36

IF YOU INSTALL THIS PATCH TO A LIVE SYSTEM, YOU MUST PERFORM
A RECONFIGURE REBOOT (boot -r) IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLING
THIS PATCH, BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY OTHER OPERATION (EXCEPT
THOSE DESCRIBED IN NOTE 28), INCLUDING ANY SUBSEQUENT PATCH
OPERATION.

If you see a message of the type:

NOTICE: cannot instrument return of fd_intr at <addr>:
         non-canonical return instruction

it can be safely ignored, it's harmless.

See bugid 6289517 (dtrace doesn't like fd_intr anymore):
         http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-1-6289517-1
If you see the following message:

         dlopen failed: /usr/lib/devfsadm/linkmod/SUNW_tape_link.so:
         ld.so.1: devfsadm: fatal: relocation error:
         file /usr/lib/devfsadm/linkmod/SUNW_tape_link.so:
symbol system_labeled: referenced symbol not found

it can be safely ignored, it's harmless.

NOTE 28: The current pci nexus driver is incompatible in a configuration where
the Emulex LP10000 HBA runs at 33Mhz when shared by another slot. This
is due to 6425501 (SW workaround for XMITS 3.x HW bug 6313648)

As a remedy, avoid installing Emulex LP10000 HBA in 33Mhz slots (XMITS
3.X IO boat) and a Slot where the PCI bus is shared by another slot
that has a 33Mhz HBA installed.
